On 24 October 2023, in Luxembourg, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Latvia, Krišjānis Kariņš, took part in the meeting of the General Affairs Council of the European Union (EU). One of the topics on its agenda was related to opportunities offered to the EU upon the accession of new members, and the next steps towards launching accession negotiations with Ukraine and Moldova.
Latvia’s priority is a geostrategically strong EU with Ukraine and Moldova as its members following their accession. It is important for Latvia that a decision to launch accession negotiations is taken as early as in December.
The ministers continued preparations for the European Council meeting on 26 and 27 October, as well as discussions as regards the request by Spain on extending the EU language regime to include Catalan, Basque and Galician.
The representatives of Member States were introduced to the demography toolbox published by the European Commission, and to the rule of law situation in Denmark, Germany, Estonia, Ireland, and Greece.
