On 23 March 2023 the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Latvia, Edgars Rinkēvičs, met with the President of the Republic of Malta, Dr. George W. Vella who is in Latvia on an official visit. During the meeting, bilateral cooperation between Latvia and Malta, Russian aggression in Ukraine, current topics on the European Union agenda, migration and the situation in the Global South were discussed.
The officials praised the friendly relations between Latvia and Malta and their cooperation in the European Union and other international organisations. The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Latvia emphasised the growing potential for economic cooperation as well as the desire to strengthen sectoral cooperation between Latvian and Maltese companies and educational and research institutions.
Both countries share the goal of strengthening the international order. Both parties emphasised that global challenges can only be addressed by working together. E. Rinkēvičs expressed his appreciation for Malta's work as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council and the close cooperation between Latvia and Malta in this organisation.
The President of Malta is on a visit to Latvia from 21 to 24 March. From 2013 to 2017, Dr. George W. Vella was the Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Malta.
