Savienības Vidusjūrai 8. Reģionālais forums

On 27 November 2023, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Krišjānis Kariņš, will participate in the 8th Regional Forum of the Union for the Mediterranean in Barcelona. The main objective of the meeting of the Ministers of Foreign Affairs is to discuss the current situation in the Middle East and possible solutions to the current security and humanitarian crisis.

During his visit, the Minister of Foreign Affairs plans to participate in the discussions of the Regional Forum, as well as in bilateral meetings with the Ministers of Foreign Affairs of several countries in the Southern Neighbourhood and the EU Special Representative for the Middle East Peace Process.

The Union for the Mediterranean (UfM) was established in 2008, building on the Barcelona Process launched in 1995 as an instrument for cooperation between Europe and the Southern Mediterranean. The Barcelona Declaration provides for closer cooperation between the EU and the Mediterranean countries in the following areas: politics and security, economy and finance, culture and the strengthening  of people to people contacts. The Union for the Mediterranean brings together all EU Member States and 15 Mediterranean countries. The EU institutions and the Arab League also participate in its work.
