On 1 December 2020, the Latvian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Edgars Rinkēvičs, took part in the Meeting of NATO Ministers of Foreign Affairs via tele-conference, reviewing the NATO 2030 reflection process. This initiative has been implemented under the leadership of NATO Secretary General, Jens Stoltenberg, so that the Alliance remains strong politically and militarily to ensure an effective response to both current and future security challenges.
The Foreign Ministers also discussed a report produced by a group of experts as part of the NATO 2030 process and agreed on the need to have an in-depth analysis of the experts’ recommendations for further strengthening the positions of the Alliance as a safeguard for Euro-Atlantic security. In the discussion, Edgars Rinkēvičs underlined the role of close transatlantic link, the need to move ahead with the Alliance’s adaptation measures as well as improving cooperation with its strategic partners, including the European Union.
The participants also discussed NATO’s approach concerning Russia, with Allies demonstrating unanimity on the need for further implementation of robust collective defence and deterrence measures, including in the Baltic region, while remaining open for a dialogue. Allies also discussed the steps to take in countering the ongoing violations of arms control agreements by Russia.
The Meeting of NATO Ministers of Foreign Affairs will also continue on 2 December. Allies will discuss the growing international role of China and related opportunities and challenges. To promote a common understanding and coordinated international approach, the EU High Representative, as well as the Foreign Ministers of Finland, Sweden, Australia, Japan, New Zealand, and the Republic of Korea will join the discussion.
In a joint session with the Foreign Ministers of Georgia and Ukraine, the participants intend to discuss the security situation in the Black Sea region, including Russia’s military build-up in the region and violations of Georgia’s and Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. An exchange of views will take place on the Allied support for Georgia and Ukraine, including through training together in military exercises.
