On 28 September 2020, during an official ceremony in Riga Castle, the President of Latvia, Egils Levits, presented credentials to the next Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Latvia to Spain, Māris Klišāns.
Māris Klišāns began his career with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1992. He has headed the Information and Press Department; the International Organisations and Human Rights Department; has served as Ambassador-at-Large at the Economic Relations and Development Cooperation Directorate and the European Department. Māris Klišāns has been posted as Permanent Representative of Latvia to the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons, Ambassador to Norway, the Netherlands and Greece, and non-resident Ambassador to Iceland, Cyprus and Serbia.
The Ambassador has been decorated with the Order of Orange-Nassau from the Kingdom of the Netherlands. In 2019, he was awarded a Certificate of Commendation from the Latvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Māris Klišāns is succeeding Argita Daudze, who has been representing Latvia’s interests in Spain since 2016.
Latvia and Spain have friendly relations and a regular bilateral political dialogue. The two countries actively cooperate in the EU, NATO and other international organisations. In 2021, Latvia and Spain mark one hundred years of diplomatic relations.
