On 5 February 2025, the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Latvia, Elita Gavele, submitted a letter of credence to the President of the Republic of Malta, Myriam Spiteri Debono.
As part of the accreditation ceremony, the officials discussed political and economic relations between the two countries. In the conversation, they highlighted tourism development and the promotion of Latvia in Malta as a tourist destination. The Ambassador and the President agreed that there was a need to facilitate economic cooperation by exploring opportunities for various cooperation projects so as to follow up on exchange visits by senior officials held in 2023 and 2024.
Latvia and Malta are like-minded countries and close partners in the European Union and other international organisations. The Ambassador expressed gratitude for Malta’s contribution as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council in 2023-2024, particularly, for proposals in support of Ukraine. Elita Gavele welcomed Malta’s efforts during its presidency of the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe in 2024 and wished Malta a successful presidency of the Council of Europe’s Committee of Ministers from May to November.
At the end of the meeting, the Ambassador of Latvia and the President of Malta discussed developments in Ukraine and the Middle East, and transatlantic relations.
