On 25 March 2025, the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Latvia, Jurijs Pogrebņaks, submitted a letter of credence to the President of Montenegro, Jakov Milatović. The accreditation ceremony was held in the presidential residence in the city of Cetinje.
In a conversation with the President of Montenegro, the Ambassador emphasized the good and friendly relations with Montenegro, welcomed the regular political dialogue and confirmed his readiness to strengthen political cooperation. 2026 will mark the 20th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the Republic of Latvia and Montenegro. In light of that, Jurijs Pogrebņaks underlined Latvia’s desire to continue strengthening bilateral relations, cooperation in international formats, economy and tourism, including through the use of the airBaltic direct flights.
The ambassador thanked Montenegro for its contribution to strengthening Latvia’s security. Montenegrin military personnel are also deployed to Latvia as part of the NATO Multinational Brigade. Jurijs Pogrebņaks emphasized that, considering the geopolitical and strategic importance of the Western Balkans region, Latvia supports Montenegro’s membership of the European Union, along with the European perspective for the other Western Balkans countries. “Latvia appreciates what Montenegro has achieved in its European integration process, and wishes luck with the implementation of further reforms,” said the Ambassador during the conversation.
The officials also expressed the need to continue political, military and economic support to Ukraine.
In his current posting, Jurijs Pogrebņaks succeeds Agnese Kalniņa, who was serving as Ambassador to Montenegro since 2021. The Ambassador resides in Budapest, Hungary.
