Poikāns Irākā

On 15 May 2023, the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Latvia, Juris Poikāns, presented his letter of credence to the President of the Republic of Iraq, Abdul Latif Rashid.

During the following conversation, the Ambassador of Latvia and the President of Iraq expressed appreciation of the good relations between the two countries and spoke about the possibilities for strengthening them. The officials discussed current issues of international importance, as well as exchanging views on the global impact of the war waged by Russia on Ukraine.

As part of his accreditation visit, Ambassador Poikāns also met with the Foreign Minister of the Republic of Iraq, Fouad Hussein, for a discussion about the possibility of launching negotiations in the near future on the conclusion of an agreement on the avoidance of double taxation and prevention of tax evasion with regard to taxes on income and capital, as well as on a readmission agreement.

The Ambassador also met with other officials from the Iraqi Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Head of the Delegation of the European Union to Iraq, Ville Varjola, as well as the Ambassador of Poland to Iraq, Marcin Kubjak, and the Ambassador of Finland to Iraq, Matti Lassila.

Ambassador Juris Poikāns is the third Ambassador of Latvia to Iraq. Before him, Latvia was represented in Iraq by Atis Sjanīts and Pēteris Kārlis Elferts.

The Ambassador of Latvia to the Republic of Iraq, Juris Poikāns, resides in Warsaw, Poland.
