On 27 May 2022, the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Latvia, Juris Poikāns, submitted his letter of credence at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Romania.
During the visit, the Ambassador and the officials of the Romanian Foreign Ministry underlined the good and friendly relations between the two countries and discussed the ways how to strengthen them. The visit of Ambassador Juris Poikāns to Bucharest took place shortly before the centenary of the Latvian-Romanian diplomatic relations.
A special focus in the discussions was placed on the security situation in the region caused by Russia’s war in Ukraine. The diplomats also noted the close cooperation between Latvia and Romania in the European Union and NATO.
As part of her accreditation visit, the Latvian Ambassador met with the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs in charge of strategic matters, Iulian Fota; the State Secretary for European Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Daniela Gitman; the Adviser to the President on Foreign Affairs, Calin Tantareanu, the Adviser to the President on European Affairs, Luminiţa Odobescu; and the Adviser to the Prime Minister, Alina Padeanu.
In his ambassadorial post, Juris Poikāns succeeds Edgars Bondars, who had been serving as Ambassador to Romania since 2018.
