On 15 and 16 June 2023, the first political consultations with the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago were held under the leadership of Deputy State Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Andžejs Viļumsons.
The officials discussed ways to strengthen cooperation in international organisations, in particular the UN. Andžejs Viļumsons thanked Trinidad and Tobago for support on the principles of the UN Charter and Ukraine's territorial integrity. During the meeting, the current situation in the Caribbean region was discussed.
The delegations of Latvia and Trinidad and Tobago expressed interest in developing bilateral cooperation in the fields of education, culture and new technologies.
During the visit, the Latvian delegation also met with the deputy head of the European Union delegation in Trinidad and Tobago, representatives of the UN mission and resident ambassadors of the EU member states, and also visited the headquarters of the Association of Caribbean States.
The Latvian delegation was received by Chief Secretary of the Tobago House of Assembly the Honourable Farley Chavez Augustine, with whom historical ties and opportunities for further cooperation in culture and education were discussed.
