On 18 March 2025, the Parliamentary Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Artjoms Uršuļskis, will take part in a meeting of the European Union (EU) General Affairs Council in Brussels, Belgium. Its agenda will focus on the strengthening of relations between the EU and the United Kingdom, EU legislative priorities for 2025, and policy objectives for the next five years.
The Council will also make preparations for the European Council on 20-21 March, the key topics of its agenda covering of the Russian war against Ukraine, developments in the Middle East, European security and defence, the EU Multiannual Financial Framework, competitiveness, and migration.
Ministers are expected to approve recommendations on the economic policy of the euro area for 2025. This will take place as part of the annual European Semester, a framework for coordinating economies, budgets, and the employment and social policies of the Member States since 2011.

The General Affairs Council deals with matters affecting more than one EU policy, such as negotiations on EU enlargement, preparations for the meeting of the European Council, development of the EU’s long-term budget, as well as the rule of law, institutional and administrative matters.
