On 1 November 2024, Tomass Pildegovičs, Advisor on Security and Societal Resilience to the Minister of Foreign Affairs, took part in the launch of the United Nations (UN) Ambassadors Program, held in the John F. Kennedy Reading Room at the National Library of Latvia. In the presence of Julia Jacoby, Deputy Chief of Mission at the U.S. Embassy in Latvia, the participants of the event discussed the role of the United Nations Security Council in today's challenging world and the priorities of Latvia’s candidacy to the UN Security Council for the 2026-2027 term: the rule of law and democracy; women's empowerment; and solutions for security, sustainability and development.

Fifteen young people from Latvia’s regions and the Latvian diaspora have been accepted to the UN Ambassadors Program. Until May 2025, experts and professionals will develop the young participants’ skills in public speaking, media literacy, political process analysis, diplomacy and leadership. The participants will apply their newly-acquired knowledge in practice in order to promote understanding among Latvia’s society, especially youth, regarding UN institutions and the activities and role of Latvia in the organisation.

The UN Ambassadors Programme is being implemented under the project, Strengthening the UN Youth Delegate Program in Latvian regions”, with support from the U.S. Embassy in Latvia. The project is organised by the Latvian UN Youth Delegate Programme and aims to increase public outreach concerning UN institutions, the role and activities of Latvia in the organisation, as well as to strengthen the civic activity of youth.
