On 13 November 2024, political consultations between the Ministries of Foreign Affairs of Latvia and China were concluded in Beijing. They were chaired by the State Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Latvia, Andžejs Viļumsons, and the Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs of the People’s Republic of China, Deng Li.

The Latvian and Chinese officials discussed bilateral cooperation, the European Union-China relations, as well as regional and international security matters. Andžejs Viļumsons drew particular attention to Russia’s war against Ukraine, highlighting China’s special responsibility as a permanent member of the UN Security Council for ensuring peace and the implementation of the principles enshrined in the UN Charter.

Previous political consultations between Latvia and China took place on 24 May 2023 in an online format.

During his visit, State Secretary Viļumsons met with the leadership of the Ministry of Commerce of China to discuss the economic relations between Latvia and China, focusing on the promotion of export opportunities for Latvian products to China.

As part of the visit, a meeting was also held with the President of the European Union Chamber of Commerce in China, Jens Eskelund.

In conclusion of the visit, State Secretary Andžejs Viļumsons took part in the reception hosted by the Embassy of the Republic of Latvia in honour of the 106th anniversary of the proclamation of the Republic of Latvia, and opened the festive event with an address to the guests.
