The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Latvia and the Ministry of International Relations and Cooperation of Namibia have held their second political consultations in Riga on 3 June 2024. Representatives of both countries discussed bilateral and multilateral issues, as well as the current situation and challenges in global security.
During the consultations, Katarina Plātere, Director General of the Bilateral Relations Directorate of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Latvia, praised the dynamics of bilateral relations between Latvia and Namibia, pointing to the potential for further development in the economic, educational and cultural sectors. The two sides exchanged views on prospective areas of cooperation and discussed ways of developing the bilateral legal framework.
As for global and regional issues, the Latvian side described the situation in Europe considering the full-scale impact of Russia's war in Ukraine. Sabine Böhlke-Möller, Head of the Namibian delegation, Deputy Executive Director and Head of Department of Bilateral Relations and Cooperation at the Ministry of International Relations and Cooperation of Namibia, outlined the situation in the Southern African region and in Africa as a whole.
The Namibian delegation continues the visit in Latvia. In the upcoming days, the delegation will meet with representatives of the Ministry of Agriculture of Latvia, the Latvian Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the Association for Economic Cooperation and Investments for Latvia (#esiLV community), which has implemented a very successful Latvian development cooperation project in Namibia.
The Namibian delegation is also participating in the forum "Latvia and African Countries: Partners for Peace and Resilience" organised by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Latvia.
In October 2022, the first political consultations between Latvia and Namibia took place in Windhoek, Namibia.
