On 26 March 2025, Riga hosted political consultations between Latvia and Turkmenistan, which addressed bilateral and multilateral relations, including exchange of visits, opportunities for economic cooperation, as well as cooperation in international organizations. The consultations were co-chaired by the Under-Secretary of State of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Latvia, Political Director Ivars Lasis, and the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan, Ahmet Gurbanov.
During the talks, Ivars Lasis highlighted Latvia’s interest in continuing to expand cooperation with Turkmenistan, and he also informed his counterpart about Latvia’s candidacy for an elected member’s seat on the UN Security Council in 2026–2027 and the campaign priorities.
The partners exchanged views on the regional and international issues of current importance, including Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine. Ivars Lasis underscored Latvia’s support for Ukraine, its sovereignty and territorial integrity. Mutual support was expressed for closer relations between the EU and Turkmenistan.
The previous political consultations between Latvia and Turkmenistan took place in Riga in 2012.
