On 1 March 2021, the political consultations were held between Latvia and the Co‑operative Republic of Guyana. The Latvian delegation was headed by the Under Secretary of State of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Political Director Jānis Mažeiks, and the delegation of Guyana – by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Elisabeth Harper.
In their consultations, an emphasis was placed on the mutual inclination to develop political dialogue and bilateral relations, as well as on exploring opportunities for economic cooperation. The Political Director provided information to the delegation of Guyana on solutions offered by Latvian companies in the high technologies sector, including mobility technologies and digital solutions in forest monitoring. The Guyanese diplomats were also given a presentation on opportunities in the educational sector and cultural exchange. Latvia and Guyana already have experience of cooperation in international projects promoting good governance.
Both sides also spoke of their interest in continued development of a pragmatic relationship between the EU and Guyana. The delegations shared views on current regional issues and cooperation in international organisations. Then the consultations addressed cooperation with the United States of America and the development of relations with Russia and China.
Diplomatic relations between Latvia and Guyana were established on 16 March 2015. The first non-resident Ambassador of Guyana to Latvia was accredited on 16 April 2019.
The capital city of Guyana, Georgetown, hosts the Secretariat of the Caribbean Community, CARICOM. The organisation includes various countries of the Caribbean region and the development of dialogue with CARICOM is one of Latvia’s priorities for cooperation in the area.
