On 23 January 2024, the Under Secretary, Political Director of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Andžejs Viļumsons, met with the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Oman, Bader Mohammad Bader Al Mantheri, and the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Mauritania, Boubacar Kane, who have arrived in Latvia for an accreditation visit.
During the meeting with the Ambassador of Oman, Andžejs Viļumsons underlined Latvia’s desire to strengthen political dialogue, promote cooperation in international organisations, and promote the development of economic relations between the two countries. The diplomats agreed to intensify the mechanism of political consultations in order to maintain a regular dialogue in the future. Security issues in the Middle East were also discussed. In a conversation with the Head of the Bilateral Relations Directorate, Katarina Plātere, the Ambassador of Oman was assured of Latvia’s unwavering stance in condemning Russia’s full-scale aggression against Ukraine.

At his meeting with the Ambassador of Mauritania, Political Director Viļumsons underlined Latvia’s intention to strengthen political dialogue and promote economic contacts. During the conversation, the security situation in the Sahel region was discussed in the context of the growing threat of cross-border terrorism, risks to food security and those posed by migration. Andžejs Viļumsons welcomed current cooperation between the European Union and Mauritania in the areas of security, migration and fisheries. The officials agreed to conclude a Memorandum of Understanding on the establishment of a political consultation mechanism to maintain a regular dialogue in the future.
