In protest at the military aggression of Russia in Ukraine, the Chargé d’Affaires, a.i., at the Embassy of the Russian Federation, Alexander Sheremet, was summoned to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and he was handed a protest note addressed to Russia. The Head of the Bilateral relations Directorate, Nils Jansons, expressed to the representative of Russia the strongest condemnation of Russia’s unjustified invasion in the territory of Ukraine. It was pointed out that Russia was fully responsible for the situation and its consequences, including the loss of innocent lives.
Nils Jansons underlined that the Latvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs calls on Russia to immediately cease its armed aggression against Ukraine, withdraw its armed forces from the entire territory of Ukraine and deescalate the situation with a view to a political solution.
The Head of the Directorate informed the Chargé d’Affaires that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs had decided to recall for consultations the Ambassador of Latvia to Russia, Māris Riekstiņš, over Russia’s actions, as well as suspending, for an indefinite period, the issuing of visas to Russian nationals, except for humanitarian reasons and other special cases.
