On 30 September 2022, the Ambassador of the Russian Federation to Latvia, Mikhail Vanin, was summoned to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Latvia in order to present him with the Foreign Ministry’s note of protest against the illegitimate annexation of the occupied territories of Ukraine and to condemn the decision of the President of Russia to absorb those territories into Russia.
The Ambassador of Russia was received by the Head of the Bilateral Relations Directorate, Nils Jansons.
A protest was expressed to the Russian Ambassador over the decision of the President of Russia concerning the annexation of the occupied regions of Ukraine to the Russian Federation. It was indicated that such a decision was in gross violation of the Charter of the United Nations and other provisions of international law. It was underlined that Latvia categorically did not recognise and would never recognise the annexation of those Ukrainian territories. In addition, it was pointed out that the said step on the part of Russia would also have a further negative effect on the bilateral relations between Latvia and Russia.
The Latvian side expressed unwavering and strong support for sovereignty and territorial integrity in its internationally recognized borders, while demanding that Russia cease its full-scale aggression against Ukraine.
