On 2 May 2023, the State Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Andris Pelšs, welcomed the non-resident Ambassador of Ecuador, Diego Fernando Morejón-Pazmiño, who has arrived in Latvia for an accreditation visit.
“Latvia regards Ecuador as a like-minded partner with whom we want to strengthen the political dialogue,” said Andris Pelšs during the meeting. The officials discussed opportunities for economic cooperation, especially in information and technology. The State Secretary invited Ecuador to participate in the upcoming 5G Techritory Forum in Riga. The diplomats agreed that cooperation should also be strengthened in international organisations, especially on climate issues.
The State Secretary and the Ambassador discussed Russia’s war in Ukraine and the security situation in the region. Andris Pelšs welcomed Ecuador’s support for Ukraine. Other matters discussed were the possibilities for strengthening relations between the European Union and Latin America and the Caribbean as well as the EU-CELAC (the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States) Summit due in July.
The Ambassador of Ecuador resides in Berlin, Germany. The Ambassador’s accreditation with the President of Latvia, Egils Levits, is scheduled for May 2.
