On 14 March 2024, consultations were held between the delegations of Latvia and Ukraine concerning a bilateral agreement on long-term support and security commitments for Ukraine.
Latvia was represented in the consultations by Andžejs Viļumsons, Political Director of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, while the Ukrainian delegation was led by Ihor Zhovkva, Deputy Head of the Office of the President of Ukraine.
The meeting addressed the structure of the agreement and the main blocks of content. The partners also agreed on the further process of negotiations and its time frame.
The work on a bilateral agreement on long-term support and security commitments for Ukraine derives from Latvia’s accession to the Joint Declaration of G7 Heads of State on long-term support for Ukraine adopted on 12 July 2023.
Latvia joined the Declaration on 8 August 2023.
