On 31 October 2023, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Krišjānis Kariņš, met with the United States Ambassador to Latvia, Christopher Robinson. During their meeting, the Foreign Minister and the Ambassador discussed recent foreign policy developments and security situation in the region and worldwide, support to Ukraine against Russia’s full-scale aggression, and the situation in the Middle East. The Foreign Minister strongly condemned the brutal attacks on Israel by the Hamas terrorist organisation.
This year, Latvia and the United States mark the 101st anniversary of their diplomatic relations. The security sector is the cornerstone of bilateral cooperation between the two countries. The continued presence of transatlantic allies is an important element of defence and deterrence for the common security of both the Baltic States and Europe. Latvia and the U.S. have a common opinion on the provision of support to Ukraine for as long as it is necessary.
The officials also discussed the region’s energy security, the situation at Latvia’s external border, and the strengthening of economic cooperation.
