On 12 and 13 December 2024, in Stockholm, the State Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Andžejs Viļumsons, took part in a meeting of State Secretaries of the Ministries of Foreign Affairs of the Baltic States and Nordic countries (NB8). The aim was to discuss topics related to the region’s security, including resilience to hybrid attacks, providing comprehensive support to Ukraine, as well as reinforcing sanctions to curb the Russian aggression.
Andžejs Viļumsons welcomed the commitment of the region’s countries to strengthen mutual coordination in countering current security challenges, their readiness to deepen security cooperation and assistance to Ukraine.
“Coordination among the Baltic States and the Nordic countries plays an important role in many practical initiatives, which often also gain support and broader traction in other like-minded countries in the EU and NATO formats. A vivid example of that is work on the inclusion of Russia’s “shadow fleet” in the EU sanctions list – an effort to which the countries in the region are contributing significantly.”
In 2024, cooperation on foreign affairs between the Nordic and Baltic countries is coordinated by Sweden, which has identified as its priorities the strengthening of cooperation in security policy, and the promotion of regional and global support to Ukraine. In 2025, the coordination of the Nordic and Baltic format will be taken over by Denmark.
