On 24 May 2021, the State Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Andris Pelšs, had an online meeting with the new non-resident Ambassador of India, Tanmaya Lal.
State Secretary Pelšs and Ambassador Lal expressed hope that both Latvia and India will be successful in overcoming the COVID-19 pandemic as soon as possible.
In this regard, the State Secretary mentioned Latvia’s decision this May to contribute EUR 50,000 to the UN Development Programme in support of India and its efforts to fight the spread of COVID-19..
The officials praised the ongoing cooperation between the two countries and welcomed the 30th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Latvia and India. Cooperation in education and opportunities for expanding contacts in business and trade were highlighted in particular.
The State Secretary and the Ambassador agreed that mutual support in various international organisations, for instance, in the UN framework, is an important aspect in the relationship between the countries, especially given that India is a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council in 2021–2022.
The Ambassador of India to Latvia, Tanmaya Lal, resides in Stockholm, Sweden. Remote accreditation with the President of Latvia, Egils Levits, is scheduled for 25 May.
