On 19 February 2024, in Brazil, the Secretary of State of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Andris Pelšs, met with the Secretary for Europe and North America at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Brazil, Maria Luisa Escorel de Moraes, for the third Latvia-Brazil political consultations. Andris Pelšs also had an exchange of views with the Secretary General of Foreign Affairs, Maria Laura Rocha.
During the meeting, Latvian and Brazilian officials discussed Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine, the situation in the Middle East, and current developments in Latin America and the Caribbean region. The consultation partners discussed possibilities for closer cooperation in international organisations, notably the United Nations. The Brazilian diplomat outlined the priorities of the Brazilian presidency of G20.
The Latvian and Brazilian officials confirmed their willingness to strengthen bilateral relations between the countries and expand the legal framework. Opportunities were also discussed for developing broader economic cooperation in fields such as information and communication technologies, bioeconomy and culture.
During the visit in Brasília, the Latvian delegation will also meet with representatives from the Brazilian Ministry of Justice, think-tanks, the Delegations of the European Union, and the embassies of its Member States. The visit will be followed by a meeting with the Latvian diaspora and the Mayor of the City of Nova Odessa to discuss the contribution of Latvians in Brazil to the preservation of Latvian culture. At the request of the diaspora, a public discussion will be held on current developments in Latvia and the Russian aggression against Ukraine.
