On 28 June 2021, the State Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Andris Pelšs, met with the new Ambassador of Ireland to Latvia, Eimear Friel.
Their conversation focused on bilateral relations and the strengthening of cooperation in the European Union and other international formats.
The diplomats praised current cooperation and expressed appreciation of mutual support offered in the EU and other multilateral fora. Diaspora issues and opportunities for expanding economic relations are issues of high importance in the bilateral relations between Latvia and Ireland.
The State Secretary and the Ambassador were in agreement that an essential aspect in the relationship between Latvia and Ireland is the rendering of support in various international organisations, for instance, in the United Nations, taking into account that Ireland is a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council in 2021–2022.
Before her posting to Latvia, the Ambassador was working as Deputy Consul General at the Consulate-General of Ireland in New York. The Ambassador’s accreditation with the President of Latvia, Egils Levits, has been scheduled for 29 June.
