On 7 February 2022, the State Secretary of the Latvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Andris Pelšs, hosted accreditation visits from the new Ambassadors of Nigeria, El Salvador, and Sri Lanka.

In a conversation with the Ambassador of Nigeria, Shina Fatai Alege, who resides in Kyiv, Ukraine, the State Secretary pledged Latvia’s intention to build cooperation with Nigeria, especially in the field of information and communication technologies. The Nigerian Ambassador proposed that political consultations be organised this year to strengthen bilateral contacts and agree on concrete areas for cooperation, as well as expanding the legal framework and signing memoranda of understanding. The Ambassador noted he would like to see more Nigerian students at Latvia’s universities and promote cooperation between the higher education institutions of the two countries.

As Andris Pelšs met with the Ambassador of El Salvador, Patricia Nathaly Godínez Aguillón, who resides in Stockholm, Sweden, he proposed organising bilateral political consultations and cooperating in international organisations and multilateral diplomacy. The Ambassador confirmed that Salvador was interested in signing a Memorandum of Understanding on holding political consultations. Ambassador Godinez proposed that cooperation be developed in education, health and culture. She informed the State Secretary about bitcoin being conferred legal tender status in El Salvador.

In a meeting with the Ambassador of Sri Lanka, Dharshana Mahendra Perera, who resides in Stockholm, Sweden, the topics discussed were the opportunities for cooperation between Latvia and Sri Lanka in education, information technologies, and economic sectors with high value added.

The accreditation of the Ambassadors with the President of Latvia, Egils Levits, has been scheduled for 8 February 2022.
