On Riga, 20 January 2023, the State Secretary of the Latvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Andris Pelšs, met with the new Ambassador of the Republic of Korea, Lee Tong-q, for a discussion on the dynamics of bilateral relations, cooperation in international organisations, and global developments.
During the conversation, Andris Pelšs expressed thanks for Korea’s firm stance in support of Ukraine, condemning Russia’s aggression against Ukraine, and he also made note of comprehensive opportunities for cooperation with Korea as a reliable and like-minded partner in the Indo-Pacific region.
The State Secretary called for developing bilateral economic relations both in comparatively new fields, such as information and communication technologies, smart materials, and start-ups, and in traditional sectors – pharmaceuticals, food industry, timber processing, and logistics. Andris Pelšs pointed out the opportunities provided by the capacity of Latvia’s logistics sector for cooperation in freight transportation and distribution. The officials were in agreement on the need to intensify contacts in tourism, which could be facilitated joint projects in film industry.
The submission of credentials to the President of Latvia, Egils Levits, has been scheduled for 31 January 2023.Lee Tong-q is the second resident Ambassador of the Republic of Korea to Latvia.
