On 29 January 2025, the State Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Andžejs Viļumsons met with the Ambassador of Extraordinayr and Plenipotentiary of Qatar, Saoud bin Abdulla Zaid Al-Mahmoud, who had arrived in Latvia for an accreditation visit.
The diplomats discussed the next steps in providing support to Ukraine, and Andžejs Viļumsons highly welcomed Qatar’s contribution to the return of Ukrainian children illegally deported and forcibly displaced by Russia. The officials also exchanged views on stabilization efforts in the Middle East. The State Secretary also thanked the Ambassador for Qatar’s efforts towards achieving a ceasefire agreement in Gaza.
Opportunities were also discussed for strengthening economic cooperation by promotion of contacts between the companies of the two countries in the areas such as health and industry. The Ambassador said that Latvia has a positive image in Qatar; he called for strengthening political contacts as well as promoting contacts in the education and academic sector.

Diplomatic relations between Latvia and Qatar were established on 10 December 1996.
