On 29 January 2025, the State Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Andžejs Viļumsons met with the Ambassador of Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka, Kapila Fonseka, who had arrived in Latvia for an accreditation visit.
During the conversation, Andžejs Viļumsons underlined Latvia’s desire to deepen its political dialogue with Sri Lanka. The diplomats expressed their willingness to develop the legal framework and discussed opportunities to foster economic relations, highlighting the potential for cooperation in information and communication technologies and education. The officials also discussed cooperation in international organizations.
The State Secretary and the Sri Lankan Ambassador then exchanged views on the security situation in Europe and the Indo-Pacific region. Among other matters, Andžejs Viļumsons outlined Latvia’s consistent support for Ukraine and drew attention to the global consequences of Russia’s war against Ukraine.
