On 12 February 2025, the State Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Andžejs Viļumsons, met with the next Ambassador of the Republic of Korea to Latvia, Jonghan Kim for a discussion on cooperation in security and economy and in international organisations.

The State Secretary praised the Republic of Korea as a like-minded country and an essential partner in the Indo-Pacific, both bilaterally and within the framework of the EU, NATO and the UN. The officials welcomed the close political dialogue between Latvia and the Republic of Korea. Andžejs Viļumsons highlighted Latvia’s interest in an increasingly faster advancement of cooperation in the field of investment and trade, especially in biomedicine and the defence sector.

The State Secretary thanked the Republic of Korea for its current support to Ukraine in the fight against the Russian aggression, while stressing the need to continue assistance until Ukraine’s victory. Andžejs Viļumsons condemned North Korea over its support for Russia’s illegal war against Ukraine by supplying weapons and deploying troops.

Jonghan Kim, who is the third Ambassador of the Republic of Korea to Latvia, will assume his post after accreditation by the President of Latvia, Edgars Rinkēvičs. The Republic of Korea opened its Embassy in Riga on 31 October 2012.
