On 16 November 2020, the State Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Andris Pelšs, met with the Ambassador-designate of Germany, Christian Heldt, who has arrived for his accreditation.
The State Secretary congratulated the Ambassador on his new assignment wishing him a time rich in mutual cooperation projects.
The State Secretary and the Ambassador shared the view that Latvia and Germany have established a close and active political dialogue along with excellent cooperation in business, culture and education.
The diplomats underlined that in 2021, Latvia and Germany will be celebrating important anniversaries in their diplomatic relations – the centennial of their establishment and thirty years since those relations were renewed. Andris Pelšs thanked Germany for the important contributions it has been making to strengthen the Baltic region’s security.
Christian Heldt expressed his determination to continue to enhance the relations between Germany and Latvia during his tenure, giving a sharper focus on the potential for deepening economic cooperation.
The State Secretary underlined that Germany is among the most important trade partners to Latvia and he confirmed Latvia’s interest in expanding business contacts and cooperation with a special focus on the fields of science and future technologies such as bioeconomy, biomedicine, smart materials, smart energy, and ICT.
On 17 November, Christian Heldt is submitting his credentials to the President of the Republic of Latvia, Egils Levits.
Christian Heldt began his career with the German Federal Foreign Service in 1993; he has been posted to the German embassies in Russia and the Holy See, and served as Ambassador of Germany to Kosovo.
