On 22 April 2024, the State Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Andris Pelšs, welcomed Archbishop Petar Rajić, Apostolic Nuncio of the Holy See in Latvia, who had arrived on a farewell visit upon the completion of his mission in Latvia.
The State Secretary expressed appreciation for the bilateral relations and active dialogue with the Holy See. Andris Pelšs thanked the Nuncio for cooperation over a period of time marked by significant milestones: celebrating the centenary of the establishment of diplomatic relations in 2021, and 100 years since the signing of the Concordat between the Republic of Latvia and the Holy See in 2022. The Nuncio commended respect for religious freedom and human rights pursued in Latvia.
The officials discussed the security situation in the Baltic region and Russia’s war against Ukraine. On behalf of the Holy See, the Nuncio thanked Latvia for welcoming Ukrainian refugees. For his part, the Secretary of State expressed gratitude for the contribution by the Holy See to the return of the forcibly transferred Ukrainian children.
