On 22 April 2024, the State Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Andris Pelšs, met with the Minister for European Affairs of Poland, Adam Szłapka, who had arrived on a working visit to Latvia.
The officials discussed bilateral and regional cooperation between Latvia and Poland, current topics on the EU agenda, as well as support to Ukraine. Andris Pelšs thanked Poland for its decision to join the Drone Coalition. The officials agreed on the need to continue providing Ukraine with many-sided assistance in political, military, humanitarian and economic terms, as well as to step up pressure on Russia by adopting new sanctions and effectively implementing the existing ones. Latvia and Poland are united in their support to Ukraine on its path to EU and NATO membership.
During the meeting, the firm stance of Latvia and Poland highlighted concerning the use of Russian energy resources in the EU. The position of both countries is clear – to end Europe’s dependency on Russian fossil fuels as soon as possible and accelerate the transition to green energy.
Andris Pelšs noted security at the EU’s external borders as a matter of priority, while welcoming the successful cooperation between Latvia and Poland in fighting hybrid threats.
