On 11 February 2020, the State Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Andris Pelšs, met with the Ambassador of Mexico, Francisco Eduardo del Río López, who is in Latvia on an accreditation visit.
At the meeting, the officials discussed the bilateral relations between Latvia and Mexico and activities planned in political and business cooperation. Andris Pelšs extended an invitation to the Mexican side for the next political consultations later this year in Rīga.
The Mexican Ambassador outlined the main directions of his work: the improvement of trade contacts and the promotion of mutual investments and tourism. There are considerable opportunities for cooperation in the areas of innovation, technology and science. Latvia and Mexico are cooperating actively in the higher education sector and mutual exchange of students could increase further. About 40 Mexican students study at universities in Latvia every year.
Latvia and Mexico support multilateralism and a rules-based international order, and they are interested in continuing with the current good cooperation in international organisations.
The Ambassador has presented a copy of his letter of credence at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The accreditation ceremony with the President of Latvia, Egils Levits, is scheduled to take place on 12 February 2020.
