The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Latvia deeply regrets the final adoption of the Law on Transparency of Foreign Influence by the Georgian Parliament despite strong internal and international calls to repeal the law, including the veto of the President of Georgia and the Venice Commission Opinion.
Last year the European Union opened the door for Georgia to join the EU by granting it candidate status on the understanding Georgia advances in fulfilling nine reform steps. This was a historic moment for the country and its people. Unfortunately, the decision to pursue enactment of this law deviates Georgia from its EU integration path, a trajectory that the people of Georgia have been clearly supporting.
Latvia reiterates its call on the Georgian government to engage in a meaningful and inclusive dialogue with their citizens as well as to uphold its commitment to the EU accession path.
