On 12-13 November 2022, Riga will host the Training on Negotiation Skills for women-professionals from the Baltic States representing the security and foreign affairs sector as well as the academia and non-governmental organisations. The training session is organised by the Latvian Transatlantic Organisation (LATO) in association with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and with support from the German Embassy in Latvia. The course is implemented under the “Women, Peace and Security” programme.

Training will be provided by the expert in international diplomacy, Jeremy Dommnich, from the Clingendael Academy. The two-day programme aims at motivating participants to become more effective negotiators, reflect on their strengths and weaknesses in conflict resolution, better understand their preferred negotiation style and learn how to stay in control during complex negotiations. Jeremy Dommnich will share a unique seven-phase cycle method designed by the Clingendael Academy. The participants will have the opportunity to practice the acquired insights and concepts through various exercises and simulation games.

Background information

The Clingendael Academy, located in The Hague, the Netherlands, is one of the largest independent diplomatic training centres around the world specialising in negotiation and mediation skills training. Every year, its training courses bring together around 750 diplomats and 2,500 international professionals.

The “Women, Peace and Security” programme is implemented by LATO in association with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs following the adoption of the United Nations Security Council Resolution 1325 on Women, Peace and Security, which marked the beginning of a new process in the promotion of international peace and security through placing a special focus on the prevention of gender based violence and laying emphasis on women’s representation and involvement in the conflict resolution and peacebuilding processes. Latvia has developed, and is putting into practice its National Plan on Women, Peace and Security. This mentoring programme has been devised to promote women’s professional advancement and raise awareness of the need to support women at various levels in the defence, foreign affairs, military and security sector.
