On 28 September 2021, first political consultations were held in a video-conference format between Latvia and Honduras, co-chaired by the Head of the Bilateral Relations Directorate, Nils Jansons, and the Director-General for Foreign Policy at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of Honduras, Diana Valladares Mejía.
The consultations addressed the opportunities for expanding cooperation in the field of new technologies, including the introduction of e-governance in Honduras and forest management. Diana Valladares Mejía noted that Honduras was interest in taking over Latvia’s successful experience with the introduction of e-governance and other digital solutions.
The diplomats shared opinions on the formats of regional cooperation and their potential for the intensification of bilateral relations. Current political developments in Central and Latin America as well as in the Baltic-Nordic region were also discussed.
The officials agreed to continue regular talks on the matters of high importance for the two sides, especially the ways to expand bilateral economic cooperation. The next consultations are scheduled for 2022.
On 23 September 2021, during the 76th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Latvia, Edgars Rinkēvičs, met with the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of Honduras, Lisandro Rosales. The two ministers signed a memorandum of understanding was signed regarding the establishment of a mechanism for political consultations.
