On 9-10 February 2023, the State Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Andris Pelšs was on a working visit in Brussels and met with officials from the European Union institutions to discuss a further allied support for Ukraine in its war against Russia and the EU’s involvement in the reconstruction of Ukraine. Andris Pelšs reaffirmed Latvia’s unwavering support for Ukraine as long as necessary.
The partners in talks welcomed Ukraine’s accomplishments on its path to EU membership and expressed strong support for that, while recognising that Ukraine had to carry out the required reforms. Andris Pelšs pointed out to the need of engaging with partners in third countries to raise awareness of the risks of circumventing the sanctions and to jointly fighting the narratives of the Russian propaganda.
The State Secretary also met with the Secretary General of the European External Action Service, Stefano Sannino, the Chief Foreign Policy Advisor to the European Council, Simon Mordue, the Director General for the European Neighbourhood Policy and Enlargement Negotiations, Gert Jan Koopman, and the EU Special Representative for Central Asia, Terhi Hakala.
