Support for Ukraine
On 23 and 24 October, 2024, Riga was hosting the Third Parliamentary Summit of the International Crimea Platform. The aim of the summit was to highlight the global impact of Russia’s aggression and continue to shed light, at the international level, on the crimes committed by the aggressor and promote international support to Ukraine. On 16 October 2024, the Ministers of Foreign Affairs of the Baltic States and Nordic countries (NB8) visited Odesa in Ukraine. The Nordic Baltic countries are united in their unwavering commitment to support Ukraine. During the visit, the Nordic and Baltic Foreign Ministers informed the Ukrainian side about a substantial winter package of measures in response to Ukraine’s most pressing needs, including energy, social infrastructure and humanitarian support. The support aims to alleviate the suffering caused by Russia’s attacks by contributing to basic needs such as heating and clean water during the cold winter months. On 11 January 2024, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Latvia, Krišjānis Kariņš, and the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, Dmytro Kuleba, in the presence of the Prime Minister of Latvia, Evika Siliņa, and the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, signed an Agreement between the Government of the Republic of Latvia and the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine on Technical and Financial Cooperation. On 18 October 2023, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Krišjānis Kariņš met with the Ambassador of Ukraine to Latvia, Anatolii Kutsevol. During the meeting, the Foreign Minister and the Ambassador discussed the developments in the Middle East, the impact of the Israeli-Hamas armed conflict on the security situation in the region and its possible repercussion for Ukraine, the consequences of the Russian aggression against Ukraine, and Ukraine’s resilience against the aggressor. The officials exchanged views on the EU’s support to Ukraine, including Ukraine’s further integration into the EU, as well as Latvia’s practical involvement in the reconstruction of Ukraine. On 7 September 2023 in Chernihiv, the Ambassador of Latvia to Ukraine, Ilgvars Kļava, acting on behalf of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the Deputy Resident Representative the United Nations Development Programme in Ukraine, Christophoros Politis, signed an agreement on the reconstruction of infrastructure facilities in the Chernihiv Oblast. The reconstruction project will be carried out by the UNDP in Ukraine. The total amount of the funds contributed under the agreement is 2 million euros.
